The vallenato rhythm was originally played with accordion, box and guacharaca. At the time vallenato did not have the significance that has today; I listened mostly in the province of Colombia, and anyone could sing it. Some singers, even didn't read or write, so in the lyrics and some grammatical errors is appreciated. For example, Juan says Polo Valencia in a song: "The Woodpecker a bird tristecito, as that " expect " die... " Is believed that that grass López in another song tells: "Juancho Polo Valencia has no teeth or has toothache had a degree of school but singing is 34 science;. In 1976, a singer who just began and who later became very famous, appeared smiling in the photo of the cover of the disc, it is could demonstrate that a tooth was missing. From 1978 the vallenato begins to change: new singers and groups appear as the Binomio de Oro, whose members appear elegant and well-dressed in the photos; also arise new composers with a good academic background, as doctors, engineers, dentists, etc. Some of the new singers come to study and settle in Barranquilla, and is at this time when the joint vallenatos begin to include in their interpretations new instruments such as bass, guitars, timpani, keyboards, piano, etc. Already with this " touch " modern and the level of academic and cultural singers, composers and musicians, high, vallenato begins to position itself as what it is today: one of the most important musical rhythms and they like in Colombia, in South America and in some European countries.
The guacharaca is a musical instrument from scratch, mainly used in the vallenato. Consists of two parts: the same guacharaca, of corrugated surface and comb or fork, made of wire with a wooden handle, used to tear the guacharaca corrugated surface which produces a characteristic sound. Its interior is carved canoe-shaped. The guacharaca has a length of about 35 centimeters approximately.
