Word alistana: lupins, chochos, are the fruits of a plant legumes such as chickpeas or beans. Legumes are good for pay the soil because nitrogen in its roots lay. Lupin is scientifically called lupinus albus and its fruit is edible by people and animals alike and highly recommended by their nutritional characteristics whenever you remove the bitterness in the water. I remember that some residents of the town, when I was a rapa, got in the river for two or three days a sack with entremozos so that the water of the river dragged substances causing bitterness. Some confuse this fruit with wheels or vetch that formerly grew between the chickpeas and peas. The fruit of these three leguminous plants eaten green and dry. What rich were green!. But you had to dip in the pond of the source to remove nitrate from the chickpeas. Well, the vetch are poisonous. Luckily, it grew very few among the chickpeas. The scientific name of this plant is lathyrus sativus and its fruit has an amino acid which if abused their consumption produces the disease lathyrism with muscular paralysis. Some people suffered from this disease in our surrounding by eating flour of vetch more often than it should. This flour is used and still is used in Castilla la Mancha to make porridge. It is currently prohibited its sale and consumption.
