Hobby, habitual occupation that is held for pleasure and amusement and not as work. The medieval origin is in the English hobby-horse ("horse, pony") which then passed to the toy of a stick with a horse's head for children to "ride", which was taken as entertainment since it was obviously not horseback riding. Maybe it comes from the diminutive of a horse named Robin.
