Star that is part of the southern constellation Southern Cross. It is a contraction of its astronomical name Gamma crucis (because it is the third in magnitude of brightness of the cross) surely used by navigators, since together with Ácrux (Alpha crucis, the first in brightness) they form the tree or vertical stick whose imaginary prolongation helped them to locate the South Pole.
