The word 'gaúcho' was taken as a demonym for the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). It is a Portuguese variant of the gaucho voice used in the Argentine coast, in Paraguay and Uruguay to name the man of the countryside, of rural life. See riograndense .
