From the Greek hierós, sacred, consecrated to the gods or under their protection and doulos, slave. Slave in the service of the temple of some god or goddess. Many hierodules exercised sacred prostitution. Eugea was in the service of Aphrodite's temple in Corinth, Pausanias tells us. Thousands of rich and powerful men would have died of love in his bed.
