Byzantium was the capital of Thrace (in Ancient Greece), located in the Bosphorus Strait. It was refounded in the fourth century as Constantinople by Emperor Constantine I, but they traditionally retained the demonym of Byzantines. Although its etymology is unknown, there is the assumption of an origin as an eponym of the mythical King Byzas.
