Nanometer symbol, millionth of a millimeter. It's used in nanotechnology to measure really small things whether it's viruses, molecules, atoms, cells, cell organelles, or wavelengths. The term was coined by Japanese professor Norio Taniguchi in 1974. It derives from the Greek, of course, nannos, dwarf.
