CERN is the acronym (provisional since 1952) for the Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire ("European Council for Nuclear Research"), today officially known as the European Organization for Nuclear Research. It is a Center for European Studies (with Israel as an extratinental member) dedicated to the study of particle physics and high-energy physics. It is located in Switzerland, but under European jurisdiction.
