A rootstock (also called pattern or foot) is a plant, even at times only the roots and a bit of the trunk of one of them, which has already developed an adequate root system, and is used to graft on a fingertip or a small cuttings of another plant. Once grafted forms a tree or shrub that is actually composed of two individuals which genetically can be quite different, a part is the root and part of the trunk and the rest; branches, leaves, and fruits can be another different species.The part of the tree that is grafted on the rootstock is usually called variety. The variety is the plant that you want to grow and has the characteristics desired by the propagator or farmer. The rootstock is the underground part that works and interacts with the soil to absorb water and nutrients you need the aerial part of the individual so formed.
