Tanza, according to my great, great grandmother who lived during the Spanish period in the Philippines was derived from the word &#"estancia&#", a Spanish word for large estate or Hacienda or ranch. In her story, there was a Spanish hacienda in the heart of our village Tanzang Luma &#(literal translation Old Estancia or Hacienda&#) near Pasong Mahaba. She mentioned that a Spaniard was living and in charge of the Hacienda who collected buwis &#(equivalent of taxes&#) from the harvest of rice/produce of the farmers and that it was a center of activities then. By the river, people arrived from all over and the Pasong Mahaba river bank also became a market place for those neighboring folks. That Hacienda dispappeared, the laryo or mortar blocks were dismantled and re-used by the people then. What we know in our Imus History is the existence of another Hacienda de Imus in the present day Cuartel or Camp General Pantaleon Garcia, &#(site of the Battle of Imus during the Spanish war&#). Tanzang Luma was earlier so it got the added term Luma which means Old. It is noteworthy that Hacienda de Imus/Cuartel is located in the town proper and there&#'s a direct road leading from this site to the old site in Tanzang Luma &#(now one of the barrios/barangay&#) and both are located where the same river runs through. This folklore/story originated from my great, great mother, Lola Pacia Bautista&#'s recollection who lived close to 100 years old and by my mother, Leonila Sapin who is now 89 years old. My mother grew up in her household and had the privileged of hearing stories during the Spanish time &#(which lasted until 1899&#).
