This denomination of vehicles of such qualities emerged because of similarity of the pronunciation of the initial g. p., perhaps 'yi pi', of 'general purpose': general purpose, with the nickname of the magical character Eugene the Jeep, African dog of supernatural powers, a four-dimensional world, the comic strip, comic and 'short' films, Thimble Theatre, after Popeye the sailor, from the American cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar. By his peculiar powers during the second world war the military called Jeep the new vehicle, which was for the exclusive use of the combatants.
