According to historians, Picalquí has two meanings; the first says that it comes from quechua : "vilka" meaning medicinal herb, and "here" meaning half : and the second, taken from the book "Quitus and Caras" by Professor Achilles Pérez, which says, Picalquí comes from the Colorado "Pi" meaning water; "Cal" of cove or silver; "Qui" to do; then, Picalquí would mean melting the silver, this name is probably because this was a place inhabited by people who founded silver; this community is one of the oldest in Tabacundo parish, Canton Pedro Moncayo.
