History the Taíno Indians thought that cloud peaks of the Sierra de Luquillo lived Yuquiyu, good God, it protected them. They named this mountain, Yuque which means, sacred, or white lands since their peaks was covered with clouds. When they reached the Spanish mistook the name and was called anvil. Traces of the tainos in the forest are evident with the presence of the petroglyphs on the rocks of the rivers. Its singular beauty attracted the Spaniards and in 1876 the King Alfonso XII appointed 12,000 acres in the Sierra de Luquillo as reserve, which makes the anvil one reserves more oldest in the Western hemisphere. In 1898 the Spanish-American war the Spanish Crown ceded Puerto Rico to the United States. In the 1903 U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed it as the Luquillo forest reserve. This managed service forest of the Department of Agriculture of United States ( USDA ) and the name was changed to national forest of the Luquillo Experimental Forest/Caribbean. In 1976 the Organization of scientific education and Cultural ( UNESCO ) under the programme man and the biosphere, he proclaimed it the first international biosphere reserve in Puerto Rico.
