Disease caused by the Variola virus, highly contagious, with no known cure but with a vaccine that allowed the eradication of the disease in humans (although there are variants in animals that have come to infect people). It has flu-like symptoms, which end in the appearance of pustules and scabs on the skin that leave deep scars when they fall. In many cases it is fatal.
