1. adj. Bot. It is said of dicotyledonous flowering plants, shrubs or herbs, leaves simple, opposite or alternate, with Stipules, and almost always fitted with hairs which secrete a burning juice. They have small flowers in panicles or heads, spikes, fruit naked or even in the perigone, and seed albumen fleshy; e.g., the stinging nettle and the parietaria. U t. c. s. f.
