1. adj. Zool. Said of Teleostei fishes that have the upper jaw fixed, so it doesn't run independent movements from the rest of the head, skin with thick bony plates, sometimes with barbed, which form a real shell. Lack of abdominal fins; e.g., the ORB and the ocean Sunfish.
