It was also called Panopea or Panope. It was the name of one of the Nereids in Greek mythology. She was the daughter of de Tespio and Megamede. Along with Hercules (or Heracles), they were the parents of Trepsipas. Biology is also the name of a genus of bivalve molluscs in the family Hiatellidae. Their shells are usually oblong and irregular. They are popularly known as clams.
