Places where runaway slaves or maroons took refuge. In Colombia and Mexico galleras, places where cockfights are held. Shelters where Afro-Colombian communities are concentrated direct descendants of Maroon slaves. They are also called quilombos. In Colombia there are 4 recognized official palenques : San Basilio de Palenque , in Mahates (Department of Bolivar), San José de Uré (Department of Córdoba), La Libertad (Department of Sucre) and Jacobo Pérez Escobar (Department of Magdalena).
