MESENCEPHALON upper part of brainstem that goes over the bridge and the medulla oblongata and that is below the diencephalon. It forms part of the central nervous system and comprises the quadrigeminal tubercles, the cerebral peduncles and Silvio's aqueduct. Contains the substantia nigra and the red nucleus
