It's a French word that means mother. In Spanish, it can be an apocope of Emerenciana (Name of the great-grandmother of Jesus and Grandmother of Mary). Mere, merely, only, unique . It is also used as a demerit anapocope and a disguised way of referring to a prostitute. In southern Chile it means peasant, ordinary person, guazo (also used huaso or guaso), natural. It is also a sinfle of merar, which means mixing two liquids, to soften the taste of one of them.
