guzla
  12

The guzla is a robust little bowed string instrument made from a single piece of wood in shape like a small ladle, the neck not unlike that of the violin in design except the scroll is usually carved as the stylized head of a goat. The sounding box is the &#"scoop of the ladle&#" and is covered in scraped skin and pinned to the sides. The back of the ladle can often be highly carved. The single string is held at the top on a vertical tuning peg fixed through the top of the finger board. The single string passes down the fingerboard then across the skin top of the sounding box over a simple low bridge and is looped round a stubby triangular shaped tail, also carved from the same body of wood. Used by shepherds and rural musicians in the Balkans it makes rather a buzzing, groaning sound and is used as accompaniment for songs and stories. Bigger versions exist.
