In Medicine and Dermatology, it means lifting and loss of the upper layer of the skin (epidermis) in small scales or sheets. this is a normal process of skin renewal. If it occurs excessively it is an indicator of a disease called ichthyosis. In this case it is due to dryness of the skin.
