An animaculo is what we now call micro-organism. In 1964, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek observed a drop of water under a microscope manufactured by the same, you could see wide variety of tiny beings, ones were inactive, but others seemed to move from one place to another. He believed that they were of small animals which he called animalcules
