"Amazonia or Amazonia". 1 . A region of South America corresponding to the basin of the Amazon River, which is called Amazonia or Amazonia in Spanish. The Amazonian form without an accent is the most widespread in general use, both in Spain and in America; but it is also used, especially in Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela, the form Amazonia with accent. Cf. RAE. 2 . Toponymy. The names Amazonia or Amazonia come from the legendary and ancient people of the "Amazons" of Greek mythology. It is named after the Spanish explorer and conquistador "Francisco de Orellana" who believed that tribes of warrior women inhabited the region and named both the river and the area surrounding it in reference to that mythical town.
