The term chilapo do refers to migrants from the Department of Cordoba, which arrived in Uraba; Although, by extension, in the same form the morenos and paisas are called bolivarenses, sucreños and, in general, those from the Caribbean coastal departments; conglomerate of migrants considered as part of a homogeneous culture. The entry of the chilapos to the Uraba began at the dawn of the 20th century, but determining wave which would substantially transform the social dynamics of the Urabá Antioquia was until the 1960s with the development of the landslide banana industry.
Chilapo or chilapa today has varied meanings, especially with respect to identifying much of the savannah population of the departments of Cordoba, Sucre and Bolivar in Colombia. The word chilapo says of the miscegenation that occurred in these savannah lands, mainly between Afro population and indigenous population that gave rise to a phenotype different from the most common miscegenation between Caucasians and Afros or between Caucasians and Indians, bringing it closer to what the Spaniards in colony called zambo. Given the semi-feudal socio-economic structure reigning in this area by the mid-twentieth century (large haciendas in which its workers [Afros, indigenous and mainly "chilapos"] had no property at all) when the banana agro-industry began in the Antioquian urabá, many of these people and their family groups migrated to this region, contributing customs and genetics different from the then dominant paisa-hispanic and afro-chocoana. For this reason, despite its clear ethno-geographical origin, in the region of Urabá many esmpezarion to generalize the use of the word chilapo stopped anyone or that came from the coastal savannah.
The dictionary says nothing of the word chilapo. But some say that chilapo is for a joke between Chocoanos, Antioquia and Cordobans. We in Cordoba are called blacks "blackboards", because before the school boards, the blackboards, were black. The paisas were called "güata" because the one who does not steal, kills. Some say that it is by joke or by talk that we are told chilapos, others say that it is because we do not belong anywhere (Interview with Miguel Orozco. August 2003 ) . I'm from Cordoba, and I think that don't need to discuss much to give a good meaning to this term. I am aware that in the Uraba area, this is the word used to identify we come in certain departments of the northern coast or simply because they belong to certain municipalities where we do not have sea, but the truth is that we should start by identifying the inhabitants of Urabá Antioquia, because even though are from the prosperous region , it is not possible to call them paisas, accent and culture, much less by the customs that represent them; But neither is accepted the use of the word " coastal-" for this population, because they do not directly belong to none of the departments that are part of the Colombian Caribbean coast. Then, being an intermediate territory between coastal and paisas, it deserves to be named with a word that identifies them as combined culture of two beautiful regions, and this is the word " 34 CHILAPO;.
