berlina
  6

1st_ Two-seat carriage. The name is applied today to high-end two-seater cars and also to train cars with only one row of seats. It is taken from the French berline, which is a tribute to Berlin, where its first version was created during the 17th century. It is generally used with the preposition 'in' as "penalty" (in its two meanings of "shame, ridicule" and "punishment"). It also means "isolated, separated", but that must be as a consequence of being "in the sedan" ("in the pillory"). It is a word borrowed from the Italian sedan, which is precisely the pillory where they exposed the heads of the executed as a final humiliation.
