It is also sometimes used to designate a plant or its fruit, which we also know as star fruit, carambolo or carambola. Its scientific name is Averrhoa carambola. The word Averrhoa is a dedication to the Andalusian philosopher and physician of Arab origin (Averrhoes or Averroes).
