Guido dArezzo in the eleventh century used the initial syllables of the verses of the first stanza to name the musical notes : UT queant laxis / REsonare fibris / MIra gestorum / FAmuli tuorum / SOLve polluti / LAbii reatum / Sancte Ioannes : So that these servants of yours may exalt your wonders, forgive the lack of your unclean lips, O blessed St. John!
