Tepuy or tepui is a kind of especially rugged plateaus, with vertical walls and very flat-topped ( although not in all cases ) characteristics of the Guiana Shield, mainly in the area of the Gran Sabana of Venezuela. It is usually composed of quartzites and sandstones with some thin beds of shale. It is also possible to find these unique formations in smaller amounts and sizes at the boundary with the neighbouring countries such as Guyana and Brazil.
