It is one of the many common names that chontaduro palm receives. It is also called pejibaye, pupuña, pipire, pijuayo, pixbae, chontaduro, cachipay, pifá, pibá, chima or tembe. Its scientific name is Bactris gasipaes and belongs to the family Arecaceae. It is also the name of a locality in Peru.
