1. f. carbohydrate which, in the form of microscopic grains and as reserve substance, is found mainly in cells of seeds, tubers and roots of plants, where is extracted for use as food for man or domestic animals or industrial purposes. Boiled in water, it produces a whitish, viscous liquid that takes colour bluish in contact with iodine.
