"Spain" . Transcontinental sovereign country (Europe and Africa). In Europe, it occupies most of the Iberian Peninsula, known as mainland Spain, and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. In Africa, the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, the Canary Islands on the Atlantic Ocean and several Mediterranean possessions called "places of sovereignty" (Ceuta, Melilla and small islands or islets). The word Spain derives from the Latin "Hispania", the name with which the ancient Romans designated the Iberian Peninsula whose meaning was "abundant land of rabbits", on some Roman coins are engraved a seated lady with a rabbit at her feet.
