The atoms of all elements ( Carbon, Mercury, Chlorine, Beryllium) bind together to form molecules (larger and more useful, that is, they work). Those bonds are an exchange of your electrons, of any of your layers. They are also called bonds, the forces that bind the particles that make up the atom : neutrons, protons, neutrons, etc.
